Biological Scientist – Baltimore, MD

We are currently seeking a Biological Scientist (speciality in Microbiology, Molecular Biology) to work with a team analyzing environmental samples for rapid identification of pathogenic bacterial and viral threat agents. This non-research position in a molecular-based laboratory in Baltimore, MD supports a Federal contract that requires candidates to be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder. Team members are subject to background investigation/assessment and must meet eligibility requirements for access to sensitive information and materials.

Tasks

  • Conduct analyses according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies
  • Apply knowledge of good laboratory practices
  • Maintain and operate equipment and instruments, including performing calibrations and adjustments, properly and in a safe manner
  • Maintain quality assurance standards
  • Prepare reports, troubleshoot, and make recommendations to the supervisor for inclusion in comprehensive reports
  • Participate in cross training related to bioterrorism and other public health emergencies
  • Maintain knowledge and skills related to position and program through our knowledge enhancement program

Work Schedule

  • Routine laboratory operations occur 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including holidays
  • Work some holidays and weekends (i.e., rotating weekends, or every Saturday, or every Sunday)
  • During a public health emergency, 24-hour coverage for laboratory operations is needed. To maintain 24/7 operations, extended work hours and alternative shift work, including weekends may be required.

Requirements

Ideally, the candidate will have

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in microbiology, molecular biology or a related science
  • 1-2 years (post-Bachelor’s degree) of recent, relevant laboratory bench experience, utilizing
    • polymerase chain reaction (PCR, RT-PCR)
    • aseptic techniques
    • biological assays
    • ELISA
  • Min 1 year of experience as a Team Leader or Senior Scientist of a laboratory team/project
  • Able to work effectively in a small team.

-OR-

  • Ph.D./Master’s degree from an accredited university in microbiology, molecular biology or related course work in biological sciences
  • Min. 1-2 years of recent relevant laboratory bench experience, utilizing
    • polymerase chain reaction (PCR, RT-PCR)
    • aseptic techniques
    • biological assays
    • ELISA
  • Min, 1 year of experience serving as a Senior Scientist or Team Leader of a laboratory team/project.
  • Able to work effectively in a small team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent, weekly hands-on experience with real-time PCR, ELISA, biological assays and aseptic techniques
  • QA/QC experience
  • Recent BSL-3 experience
