Scientist - Behavioral (nonhuman primates) – NIH – Poolesville, MD

We are currently seeking a Scientist to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in Poolesville, MD.

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of research programs on the neurobiology of cognitive aging in nonhuman primate models.
  • Conduct behavioral neuroscience research in rhesus monkeys, including neuroimaging.
  • Perform extensive behavioral testing in young and aged rhesus monkeys, including both manual and computer-aided/touch screen-based testing.
  • Perform in vivo brain imaging using MRI.
  • Work with staff on anesthesia, recovery and general animal support for neuroimaging.
  • Work with staff to develop touch screen-based neuropsychological task using the “Presentation” platform.
  • Maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data and findings.
  • Prepare summaries, reports, manuscripts, posters and presentations.
  • Attend meetings and conferences; present findings and results to staff.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Ph.D. in Animal Behavior, Neuroscience, Psychology or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of post-doctoral experience, including training in behavioral or neuroscience research in nonhuman primates.
  • Strong background in behavioral neuroscience research in rhesus monkeys, including neuroimaging experience.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis.
  • Basic programming skills or the ability to learn for the development of touch screen-based neuropsychological task using the “Presentation” platform.
  • Experience with anesthesia, recovery and general animal support for neuroimaging.
  • Experience with post-acquisition neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI), analysis experience, including AFNI and FSL.
  • Brain histological experience.
  • Quantitative neuroanatomical expertise.
  • Familiarity with R, Python.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Upon employment must complete within 30 days upon arrival at NIH the required NIH safety and research integrity coursework/training as mandated for all scientific staff working in NIH facilities:
    • Introduction to Responsible Conduct of Research
    • Introduction to Laboratory Safety
    • Laboratory Safety at NIH
    • Protection of Human Research Subjects
    • Technology Transfer Online Training
  • Must sign Patent Agreement form and Contractor Employee Patent Agreement form at vendor’s orientation
  • Upon employment must complete the NIA IRP New Employee Safety Training Checklist form and send the completed Checklist form to NIA IRP Safety Officer, Room 2B117, BRC Building.
    • Tasks listed on the Safety Training Checklist must be completed within one week upon arrival at NIH
  • Training listed on the Safety Training Checklist must be completed within 30 days upon arrival at NIH
  • Upon employment must complete required on-line training within 30 days upon arrival at NIH:
    • NIH Computer Security Awareness Training
    • NIH Sexual Harassment Training
    • Disability Awareness Training
  • Must complete required annual or bi-annual on-line training, per NIH guidelines, for:
    • NIH Computer Security Awareness Training
    • NIH Sexual Harassment Training
    • Disability Awareness Training
